some things want to grow and some just don't

The sun has shown it's face again for the first time in a while it's not going to be around for long as it's back to rain tomorrow. so we have been making the most of it mowing, planting, hedge cutting it always amazes me how long it takes to plant out all the seasonal planting and filling in any gaps that have come about from losses due to the bad winter we had. i have nearly given up on Hydrangea's i have only found one spot in the garden where they are happy to grow. in the main borders it is just too cold and wind swept for them to survive last year there new growth was frosted twice this finished most of them off. the one or two that are remaining i will dig up in the winter pop them in to some pots. grow them on a bit next year till they are a decent size and then try them in a sheltered spot some where. one plant i am very please with is one particular clump of Digitalis 'Alba' they are a good 6ft tall and covered from top to bottom in pure white flowers. the bees are loving them the whole plant is buzzing when you get close to it so there will be plenty of seed to grow a few more on for around the garden i have always wanted to plant a big bank of them with several hundred plants. when driving in to Shugbourgh this weekend they have got a bank of the native Digitalis purpurea carpeting the flour of the woodland and making a welcome site to visitors. although they are a common plant you can't beat a well grown fox glove at this time of year.
